LIT 2000.38952 (SPRING 2021) POSTCOLONIAL SHAKESPEARE

William Shakespeare’s plays have enjoyed tremendous popularity in the United States, but what about in other countries around the world? This Introduction to Literature Course takes a meaningful yet manageable dive into three Shakespearean plays and their postcolonial counterparts:

In addition to exploring the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya, the period immediately following Sudan’s independence from the British and Egyptian Governments, and Martinique’s status as a department of France, these adaptations also more broadly explore questions related to colonialism, including those related to ethics, language, resistance strategies, and more. We will also consider questions like these: Why do these authors adapt Shakespeare’s plays? How and why do authors change Shakespeare’s plots? Why do authors add and subtract characters?

Fun and meaningful activities will include online discussions, open-book quizzes, a Social Media Character page, and a short paper.
