LIT 2000 (Introduction to Literature, Online, HCC)

  • I actually love Shakespeare now! I feel smart that I’m able to discuss some of his plays outside of class! The questions that were asked during the discussions actually made us think and fully understand what we were reading.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this course. I liked that we explored some more of Shakespeare’s tragedies that I’ve never gotten to read before. The discussions were actually more helpful than I expected them to be, as the questions led me into analyzing the text in a new way and reading other student’s entries helped me gain a different insight.

  • I really enjoyed this course. At first, I was a bit hesitant because I was worried that I would not like the class, but it turned to be the opposite. I liked reading and analyzing the Shakespearean tragedies. Matter of fact, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra, became my favorite Shakespeare plays.

  • She is very organized and motivating. I would suggest her to other students.

  • Personally, I like when we break down poems and short stories together on the board . . . It gives me crucial knowledge to look back on. I also enjoy that you comment on our essays and discussions. It pushes me to send in a well thought out idea or an analysis of a work. All in all, you're one of the greatest literary teachers/professors I've ever had! Thank you.

 Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I believe the greatest benefits that English Instructors can offer to students are the critical thinking skills necessary to analyze, read, and compose texts; an awareness of the breadth, value, and richness of literary traditions; an appreciation for the ability of writing and literature to cultivate and reflect a spirit of dignity and belonging; a mastery of writing and argumentative skills; the ability to organize and compose cogent and cohesive lucid arguments; and a passion for literacy and learning. Consequently, I view teaching as both an art and a science.

I also emphasize four tenets in my approach to teaching and learning: faith (trust), fellowship (collaboration), sincerity (integrity), and service (or contribution). As developing readers, interpreters, and writers, I encourage students to trust a process (i.e., the reading and/or writing process) that sometimes feels more like a winding road than a straightforward path from A-Z. As we follow this process, we collaborate with one another, learning how others approach a reading or writing assignment and/or exploring how other thinkers and writers have addressed a topic. In our academic writing and/or interpretations, we prioritize integrity, applying ethical standards to our analysis, research, reading, and writing. Finally, I always encourage students to produce work that is for a specific purpose; each piece of communication is an opportunity to contribute to an academic conversation and/or the whole of life. We want to take care in how we create and express these contributions.

The Art and Science of Teaching Academic Writing

Inspired by David Bartholomae’s “Inventing the University,” I support the concept of the writing classroom as a space where students learn to write within the various discourse communities of a college. Approaching various aspects of writing as both an art and a science dispels the myth that only individuals with an innate talent for writing can learn to write effectively.

For example, a mnemonic device I have created, the R.E.A.C.H. model, associates the letters in “R.E.A.C.H.” with various stages of the discursive writing process. These stages—Research, Editing, Analysis, Composition, and Hypothesis—do not necessarily have to be completed in that order, and students may discover the need to revisit various stages. As students learn to identify the underlying rhetorical appeals in various texts, they see that foundational principles undergird all good arguments, but that arguments are also creatively tailored for specific purposes and audiences.

To accomplish these aims, I approach writing as both a process and a product, encouraging writers to follow a process (i.e., inventing; pre-writing; drafting; reviewing and revising; and editing, proofreading, and submitting) to create a product that, ideally, is effective and grammatically correct.

The Art and Science of Teaching Literature-Based Composition and Literature

For centuries, literary enthusiasts and scholars have debated whether literature instructs or delights, and my belief that it does both informs my approach to teaching it. Literature teaches some of the best lessons life has to offer. It also provides entertainment through vast worlds otherwise unexplorable to humanity. As such, I believe that analyzing and interpreting literary texts paves the way to experiencing their enjoyable and edifying effects. Whenever possible, I offer students choices in the approaches they take to a text. I strive to create problem-based assignments and discussions, encouraging students to reflect on how literary texts intersect with their lives.

Examples of problem-based assignments that I use in my literature courses to help students interpret texts include “G.R.I.P.E.S.” worksheets. The worksheet for literature focuses students’ attention on the genre, rhetorical situation, imagery, plot, effective language, and structure of a poem, short story, or novel. Students can use the insights gained from these activities to compose thesis-driven compositions about literature. I also assign metacognitive activities to further students’ insights regarding the form and meaning of a text. For example, in an Introduction to Literature course, I previously assigned “Google Docs Reports,” asking students to record an activity, observation, discovery, or question from the most recent class in the Google Doc. The students subsequently reflected on the textual formal elements and cultural contexts that were stressed during a particular class session.

Evaluation: Grading, Assessing, and Reflecting on Students’ Work

I assign students’ assignments and projects a percentage and letter grade, and I include traditional tests, essays, projects, and presentations in the work I assess. I use a rubric to assess formal writing, but I also offer informal writing opportunities in writing and literature courses to encourage students to thoughtfully reflect on a prompt or text without experiencing the pressures associated with earning a percentage grade. However, I believe that grades reflect work, not students.
